Why Dutch babies are happier than American babies

vrolijke baby in NederlandAn interesting study has been published in the European Journal of Development Psychology, on the development of American babies versus Dutch babies. This study shows that Dutch babies are happier and easier to calm down in the second half of the first year. On the other hand, American children are more active and vocal.
According to researchers these differences reflect American and Dutch parents’ unique cultural values. Already at the first courses American parents learn how important it is to stimulate their babies with toys and to read books with them. Purpose: to expose their children to many new experiences and make them as independent as possible. Parents in the Netherlands involve their young children especially in family life and placing strong value on the importance of rest and regularity. As a result, children in America show higher values of fear, frustration and sadness compared to Dutch children. In my opinion, this fits completely into the report of The Children’s Society where Dutch children score high in terms of happiness, while US and Canadian children are among the unhappiest in the world.
The researchers found out something else: Dutch parents attach importance to a strict sleep schedule and no overstimulation. For example, the researchers were surprised to learn that the Dutch birth announcement cards indicates hours for rest for mother and child. They also noticed that Dutch parents use very little toys while playing with their children, compared to American parents. So, we are doing a good parenting job here in Holland, also with the help of our child health clinics! We should look critically at the enormous amount of babytoys, courses and activities to stimulate baby’s brains. I think we can deal with this fine. I’m more worried about something else: I see mothers everywhere constantly busy with their cell phone and therefore have little regard for their child … What will be the long term effects of that? It seems worth a study! (image: Babylonia)

Belgian cuddly dolls for children worldwide

babytrendwatcher babylonia peppaA cuddle toy is actually not a toy someone told me once. For no toy has so much sentimental value as a cuddle toy. Once your child is hooked on this soft toy, then he will cherish this for a long time. A cuddle toy absorbs odors and gives your child comfort, confidence and a safe feeling. But your child can become so attached to it that it’s a disaster if you lose it. I speak from experience, but fortunately we found the cuddle toy of my oldest son back in a shop in a holiday village in France. He, his soft toy and pacifier were inseparable. My youngest had not one but more favorite soft toys, that we once forgot when going on holiday. Fortunately, he was a little older and we promised him that he could pick up a new one when we arrived. So a newcomer was added to his collection: a sweet soft turtle.
For my children I made the soft toys themselves, from stretch terry and a head filled with sheep wool. Not a big effort if you are a little handy.
With the Belgian company Babylonia the making of this kind of cuddles has exploded. It started with the cuddle toy Tino, but now the dolls family has been expanded. Nowadays 80.000 Peppa dolls are sold worldwide. The production is done by hand in India, all according to the Fair Trade guidelines, with heads of sheep wool that absorb odors so well. They have now 60 doll makers employed. Placing the eyes is a precise job, if they are sewn too close together they become monsters! Therefore Babylonia rather chooses to let them been made in small workshops. Meet the new children in the family: Cuddly Friends of organic cotton!

Qukel original toy line for dad and kids!

qukel 2 babytrendwatcherHow to find out what really goes on in the head of my child? wondered Dutch biologist Gerard Krijger when his first son was born. He took a course in developmental psychology and found out that there are hardly any toys available that focus on the interaction between father and child. Together with two experts he developed an original toy line for the different stages of child development with playing tips for fathers and with each toy a fact, as fathers love facts. Such as the Sleep Soothe with little rabbit or monkey in the corner. Put the Sleepsoother in with Daddy for a night so that it smells of him. Afther birth the baby will recognize his smell and this will help the baby to fall asleep. Also original is Daddy Times with crinkle-crackle sound in the form of a newspaper full of Dutch songs and poems and embroidered drawings. The DoDice is suitable for children from 15 to18 months, Roll the Do Dice and what can you see? Is it a tickly spider, a stomping elephant, or a jumping kangaroo? Nice to know is that Qukel toys are made in India for a fair price of cotton with biodegradable paint.
